Selectcamp Luxury camping & mobile home holidays in France
 |
Of course there are other lovely countries in Europe where camping holidays are really excellent, but for my money there is nowhere else quite like France which has the "Je ne sais quoi" factor in abundance, which means as far as I am concerned that it is the best, but it isn't the best because it is the nearest. Camping in France has always had a mystique about it.
France was into camping holidays in proper camp sites which had pristine clean shower and toilet blocks while the rest of the Europe, including and especially the Uk, lagged behind by a generation or more.
When I first started camping 50 plus years ago the British idea of a campsite was a farm field which sometimes came complete with cattle and/or sheep. You bought milk and eggs from the farm and were allowed to use their toilet if you were lucky. The only alternative to that were Youth Hostels, but having sampled a few of those in the same era I came to prefer the farm field.
At the same time the French had set up these campsites all over the country which were originally built for use by the French themselves, until people like myself started going over there and spreading the word when we got back home.
Don't get me wrong here, there was nothing fancy about these campsites in France at that stage, but they were all to a certain standard and always had a shop cum Bar which often doubled as the camp office as well. There were, as aforesaid, clean toilets and plentyful showers for all, though the showers were unisex in those days - and by that I mean that there were no separate changing areas for men or women. You just got on with it!
Yes, things are better in France now as far as camping holidays are concerned and other countries have copied their model, so it is difficult to see where it will all go from here because we now have companies such as Selectcamp who can provide luxury tents which not only have deluxe kitchens but complete bathrooms as well.
There will most probably be improvements in the future, but the only one I can personally recommend is enforcing the quiet time rule at 11pm.
