Camping & mobile home holidays in St Julien des Landes, the Vendee
The village of St Julien-des-Landes lies about 15 KMs inland from Bretignolles-sur-Mer on the D12 road from there, and the nearest town of any significance being la Mothe-Achard some 5KMs distant, so if you are looking for a peaceful holiday out of the crowds of high summer then this is probably as restful and tranquil as it gets.
There is no beach obviously, but that is a minor detail as you have the whole Cote de Lumiere to play with starting at Bretignolles, and if you like walking, especially combined with watching wildlife then the Foret d'Olonne is the place for you.
The Foret is woodland which runs down the coastline from Brem-sur-Mer to les Sables d'Olonne and which is pretty well unbroken in that distance. We (editor & family) have walked in here many times an if you are reasonably quiet you will see some little red squirrels which live in all the woods in France
There are two or three camping sites in the near vicinity of St Julien and peace reigns in every one of them, but you may decide you've had enough of the peaceful life and want to explore, so why not pop out for the day to somewhere like la Roche-sur-Yon?
La Roche is the capital city of the Vendee region, but as well as that there is some quite fascinating history there even if you only go back as recently as 1804 when the town (as it was then) was rebuilt by Napoleon, even if the inhabitants still dislike the sound of his name to this day - Vendeeans disliked him intensely because of his wars with them, and indigenous people of this region still don't like to be called French - they are Vendeeans!
Another nice day put without travelling too far is to pop into les Sables d'Olonne. Sensible advice would be to hop on the first Park & Ride bus you see as they are inexpensive and usually the longest wait you will experience is 20 mins. Doing that will cost you just a few € Euros but will save you a great deal of hassle in looking for a parking place.
Les Sables has most of what you could wish for in a town with a vast variety of shops, one of the best Zoos in the country just on the southern outskirts and some stunningly magnificent beaches.
Your camping holiday in St Julien could possibly be all the better for knowing this!
