Camping & mobile home holidays in the Loire & Loire Valley
The Pays de la Loire departments are Vendee, Mayenne, Sarthe, Loire Atlantique and Maine et Loire with the Vendee being the region most visited by people taking camping and mobile home holidays and is just a few hour’s drive from the French ports of Cherbourg, Caen and Le Havre.
When you think about the Loire, a couple of things immediately come to mind: the river and magnificent châteaux. It is often referred to as the "Garden of France", the Pays de la Loire is a land of vineyards, water and rolling green hills with thousands of medieval chateaux scattered across its luxurious landscape. This region was the playground of kings, princes and the nobility in days gone by, and it is still the wealthiest area of France.
The region is named the river Loire, the longest river in France, which runs through the heart of the department and the the Pays de la Loire is one of the most famous areas in western France and one of the most popular vacation destinations, and particularly popular for camping holidays.
Probably the most popular camping holiday resorts are in the Vendee, such as St Jean de Monts, St Hilaire de Riez and the next door St Gilles Croix de Vie, Bretignolles-sur-Mer, Brem-sur-Mer, les Sables d’Olonne, Port Bourgenay, Jard-sur-Mer, St Vincent-sur-Mer and la Tranche near the south of the region. The Loire Valley boasts some amazing history and could really be the subject for a holiday of discovery if nothing else. Chatres alone has spectacular medieval history and architecture in its cathedral – the very same cathedral which Rodin called the Acropolis of France. The Old Town of Chartres is made up of medieval cobbled streets, gabled houses and charming footbridges lies at the foot of the cathedral.
Orleans, Once France's second largest city is now the vinegar capital of the country. Orleans was liberated from the British by Joan of Arc in 1429 as visitors to the city will be reminded ad infinitum.
Bourges, which is located at the geographical heart of France, is a rich historical town of paved stone streets, medieval and Renaissance architecture, ancient ramparts and the remarkable Gothic Cathedral of St-Etienne.
Blois with its famous castle has been linked throughout the centuries to the history of the Kings of France. Every Wednesday at the castle, there is night spectacle for English speaking visitors.
Chambord is the largest of all the Loire Valley castles and this magnificent Renaissance castle built by François I, is surrounded by an immense park and hunting preserve which can be visited by horsedrawn carriage if you want to make your visit romantic and well as of historical interest.
Tours lies at the junction of the Loire and Cher Rivers and is a busy university town and the traditional point of departure for exploring the Loire Valley. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the great pilgrimage sites of Europe.
So all in all, the Loire region of France makes for superb holidays with resorts both large and small, for camping and hotel based holidays to suit all ages.
