Camping & mobile home holidays in Chateau des Ormes, Dol de Bretagne, northern Brittany

Details of Camping Chateau des Ormes are further down the page

Dol-de-Bretagne is a charming little medieval market town in the Breton department of Ille et Vilaine. It is just inland from the north Brittany coast, the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel, by about 7 KMs. This is an ideal place for a camping or mobile home holiday in the Breton countryside, and so close to the major ferry port of St Malo too.

One could say that the ancient town of Dol has had rather a turbulent past, and signs of this are evident as you walk around, but much of the original architecture has managed to survive and there is plenty to see and do here that you will find fascinating, indeed, there are some incredible old houses of which some date back to the 12th century and even display Viking and Nordic influences.

The old centre of the town is busy busy and a hive of activity, especially in the high season when the tourists arrive in droves to enjoy the history and mystery of this lovely old town. There are plenty of superb cafés, shops and bars, and a great choice of restaurants too, where you can enjoy Breton specialities such as cider, seafood and pancakes. There is a market on Saturdays, and it is an excellent example of a French street market with everything, but everything on sale in the most colourful fashion!

Mont Dol is an imposing dome-shaped granite rise which was once an ancient site for Druid worship. The Mont was originally sited on an island, but in recent times this has become a swamp rather than a sea, as the land has encroached and the waters receded. It is still a fascinating historical site, and well worth a visit.
